Follicular unit transplantation (FUT) is the traditional and old method of hair transplant, which is also known as Strip method. In this procedure; the strip is extracted from the permanent zone on the back of the scalp which is called donor site. The strip is taken out, we called this area; donor area and then the strip is divided in small pieces which are further divided in hair follicles containing several hairs shafts which are preserved in special medium at specific temperature.
These hair follicles are then transplanted in bald area with special instruments.
Usually the strip length depends on the circumference of the back head and the width depends on the flexibility of skin available at the back of the head. In this procedure the surgeon gives two parallel beveled cuts on the utmost center of the back of the head which is already marked; the parallel cut is given in the first two layers of the skin so there is no chances of any deep damages. Usually Dr Habib Ullah gives parallel cuts of 20-25 cm long and their width mostly remain 1.0 to 2.00 cm, but in general cases the width depends on skin flexibility and laxity as mentioned above, after extraction of strip bleeding is controlled with diathermy and the wound is closed in layers.
10 days later the stitches are removed which leave final linear scar on back of scalp.
there is always a risk of infection in some cases in that case wound will be treated with daily dressing and antibiotics according to culture which can lead an ugly scar.
